Fr Michael joins our parish
We welcome Father Michael Patey who joins us as our new assistant priest. We look forward to a long and happy time with us, as he starts his Priestly mission. We asked him to tell us his story Please make him quickly feel feel part of our Parish Family.
Michael was born on 5th July 1979 in Weymouth, Dorset. He was baptised and brought up in the Church of England, the son of an Anglican priest. In 1981 the family moved to Grimethorpe in South Yorkshire, where his father had been appointed Vicar. Then in 1988, they moved to Leicestershire, and since 1994, Michael has counted Ashby-de-la-Zouch as his hometown, where he went to secondary school, and where his parents still live. It was in that year that Michael’s parents Colin and Cyndy took the decision to become Catholics.
In 1997, Michael began studies at the University of Durham, choosing to read Mathematics. During his first year, on 28th February 1998, his father was ordained a priest of the diocese of Nottingham. It was at this time as a university student that Michael began to practise his Christian faith independently and became a regular at Durham Cathedral. Through prayer and reflection, and helped along by the thought-provoking BBC series ‘Absolute Truth’, Michael became convinced of his need to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church, and after due preparation this came about on 20th June 1999. He graduated a year later in 2000.
From 2000-2001, he spent time living and working with a small community at the Emmaus Retreat and Conference Centre near Bromley. Michael then returned to Durham for a further year to complete a PGCE, so to teach Mathematics at secondary level. He began working at St Paul’s Catholic School in Milton Keynes in the autumn of 2002, which brought him into our diocese. Whilst teaching, and as he became more involved in the life of Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Coffee Hall, Michael felt compelled to offer himself to the Lord for service as a priest. He was accepted for seminary formation, and in 2005 he was sent to the Venerable English College, Rome, where he remained for seven years, with each September spent in different parishes around the diocese.
Michael was ordained to the diaconate at Palazzola by Bishop Peter on 13th July 2011. Following the completion of a licentiate in Moral Theology with the Dominicans at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas, he was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at the Cathedral on Our Lady’s birthday, 8th September 2012. At the end of September 2012, Fr Michael began his first appointment as assistant priest at the Parish of the Holy Child and St Joseph in Bedford town centre.
